Hello all, I am new here, and I come on a quest. I am a teacher and have given my students Jonathon Livingston Seagull as a book assignment but would love to back it up with the movie - BUT, this apparently is very hard to find. I have tried many places but all have come up empty handed...any ideas? I'd appreciate any input you have! Thank you! TW

Hi TW:
Not sure what part of the country you hail from, but here in Corvallis, Oregon Hollywood Video Rental has one for rent.
That would be the VHS of JLS
Moderator, Edina may be able to help you further. You can email her.
Good luck! So glad teachers are exposing young ones to this type of right brain exercise! 'bout time!

Hello TW... on the subject of JLS - the Movie....I have a copy but may I suggest that you forgo the effort of trying to find it for your students for several reasons; 1) I believe that the book was somewhat hijacked when being made into a film which RB was not pleased about... 2) after reading the book and using pure imagination to picture the settings and experiences, I found the film somewhat confusing in that it conflicted with my own pure interpretation of the story which, after all, only uses a seagull to represent true spirit. However, here is some information if you need it: Jonathan Livingston Seagull (c) 1973 THE JLS LIMITED PARTNERSHIP A film by Hall Bartlett released by Paramount CIC Video.. bar code: 5 014437 235527. You may also be able to find the album with songs recorded by Neil Diamond as the film's soundtrack. Good luck

TW:
And I would like to disagree with the above. I found that using the innocent seagull gave me the ability to first see the seagull in flight, and then almost immediately, in the next shot FROM THE EYES OF THE SEAGULL, I BECAME THE SEAGULL. From that point on the movie was ME.
There was no representation about it, and that was its beauty!
How beautiful it was for me to be MY SPIRIT, flying aloft and experiencing such things.
Young people, not yet concretized in their concept of reality will have the ability even better than me to receive the essence of the mystery of such flight!
Be sure to view it, and allow yourself to become it, and you will come away changed, in thought, if nothing else!
My hope is that ILLUSIONS the new movie can deliver to me such an experience.
This is right brained thinking. We get enough, in fact too much left brain information fed to us in schools, and are imbalanced as a result. Exercising the right brain=Creative Thought + Left Brain Information brings together a well balanced, hopefully fully integrated human being.
Just another perspective.

[glow=red,2,300] and a very fair point L....I think that it is impossible to suggest how any individual could or should interpret the story.. in your case, BECOMING the seagull itself allowed you to experience freedom.. in my case I saw the film as someone else's interpretation of the story which somewhat conflicted with mine.. As with every book.. interpretation is purely personal.. although I do think that the interpretation of another can release new perspectives.. which can only serve to lead to a greater understanding.. if not of the book, then at least of others.. Jo,
With the highest regard, and deepest respect...
It was not about my interpretation of the events of the movie. What was delivered to me, was myself, in flight.
I soared! I could have not even paid attention to JLS' saga. I learned to fly like an eagle in the sky!
For that I am forever grateful!

Tw, first of all welcome to the board! Like Lizanne said I would be able to help you, I'm just not sure after what Jo said you'd still want the movie. Jo is right though, but the decision is up to you.

oooh... not so warm here in the Scottish Borders! and we have drizzle here this morning! However, I'm still smiling because I know.. that above the clouds... the sun is still beaming..like life..sometimes you just have to clear the clouds and try to see trhough them! Maybe TW.. you could let your students interpret the book and then when they have their opinions, show them the video.. after all...it will either enhance their view, change their view or they will remain with their original view as I did!

No problem Lizanne... When I was about 12, my parents began working in South East Asia and therefore I had my first flights in aeroplanes.... I was mesmerised, once we had achieved the desired altitude, by the blueness of the sky and the fact that the huge white clouds looked as if I could have stepped right onto them... it was always a disappointment to descend through them ..sometimes to a grey, bleak, rainy landscape below...but I thought then that, even though I am down here.. up above the sun is shining, it will be a beautiful sunset and the sky will still be that wonderful blue...that is where this came from and something that I often refer to in my life now and also something I tell my children. It makes the greyist days something I can smile about...! In a track by the Irish recording artist 'Enya'.. Carribean Blue.. she sings of the same idea...' they say the sky up high above is Carribean blue'...hope this helps...

Thank-you so much, Jo:
What incredible imagery you offer! And so I understand a little more from your posts, that truly, we can only "fix" ourselves; however, we can lend our perspectives to another, but can't fix the other. We can love the other; but, importantly, pray to the ALL to "fix Whatever He chooses."

You are welcome Lizanne Gosh... you have raised so many points in a few sentences in your last post! For example.. it is hard to explain to a teenager about life as we know it. To him, it seems that the most aggressive, ruthless people can be successful and often the most lovng can be punished or hurt by such people. Ultimately, I have to tell him that he is unique.. there is no-one else like him on this earth.. I try to guide him and at the end of HIS day.. if everyone he ever disappeared from his life and there was just him... would he be able to close every day saying..'I did the best I could whilst causing the least pain, I smiled as much as I could and took pleasure in the simplest things and I can live with myself'. I know that loving someone will not always heal them no matter how hard you try, I know that leaving someone is often the best thing for both parties in the end. I also know that withdrawing from a harmful situation sometimes clears the way for growth and I know that I don't have the right to expect someone to grow in the same way as me or in the same direction'... and those are just a few of my thoughts at what you wrote before!

"soooooomuch", too much to post- to save room on server.
Thank-you for becoming a member, Jo, I "saw" that. You have a beautiful wisdom. I missed those growing years, and did not have a mother to deliver such wisdom. So at 55, I am learning.
welcome to the forum!!!! ;D

Thank you for your lovely welcome Lizanne! .. it's a pleasure to be here...and I, like you, am still learning.. perhaps that is the highest truth.. that there is always something new to learn, long after we have left 'childhood' behind.. although I don't think we ever do.. at whatever time I am still me whatever age I am! If we can always look at life with the eyes of a child and the wisdom of what we have learnt along the way..then we are truly growing and the adult 'me' can comfort the child 'me' .. rather like a parent.. in a way, we can become 'self-fixing' as you mentioned before. I hope you have a wonderful day Oh .. and it is STILL drizzling in the Scottish Borders! ..but not above the clouds........
