I guess this is the old question of what books would you have if you were deserted on an island? So mine is...what 5 books would you take if you were going to jump in your vehicle and go explore the United States? I'll be doing this in less than 4 months ;D ;D ;D ;D

Well, I like books that are useful for my situation, so I might take: 1.- Weird, Wonderful America : The Nations Most Offbeat and Off-The-Beaten-Path Tourist Attractions 2. - Road Trip USA 3. - The latest owner's handbook for my car 4. - An emergency/First aid handbook 5. - A blank sketch book, and lots of new penciles, charcoal, and pastels (You're gonna see lots of pretty sunsets in the midwest!) I've always loved road trips, and I've always wanted to do what you're doing. Good luck, be safe, and have fun!!

Well, I have the repair maual for my truck, very detailed Atlas, wilderness survival book(I'll be spending alot of time out in the middle of nowhere, mountainclimbing), journal(of course), and my worn to the bone copy of illusions. I think I'll add the sketch book(good suggestion!)and charcoals. I'll be starting out with a x-country to Mt. Saint Helens in the 1st week of June, then up to Alaska for the summer. After that, heading back down to the lower48 and throwing darts at the map. ;D FUN, FUN, FUN!!!

Illusions, The Tao of Pooh, Complete works of Shakespeare, War Poetry and a climbing guide I´d leave the map behind me and follow my nose! Have fun and keep us posted, Maybe there´s a book in the making?

Thats why I'm throwing darts ;D...I am, in a sense(no pun), following my nose...but my nose happens to look like my hand grasping a dart and tossing it, trusting it, in that it will surely lead me in a wonderful direction. Random beauty? Dont know about a book...not likely, I like to write stories, but mostly about fishing. Have to see what becomes of it. LL

Hmmm, what would I take? I guess it depends on whether or not I was driving. If I were driving, I would take The Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe, Illusions, something by Sidney Sheldon (Hey - we all need a little trashy reading now and again ), my Bible and something else...but I'm not sure. Would have to do some serious consideration about that. If my husband were driving, he would want me to read to him, and that would constitute my bringing along African Game Trails by Theodore Roosevelt and ANYTHING written by Peter Hathaway Capstick.

Why take any with you - Find 5 new or old along the way. What are you going to be looking for on your adventure? Rural America?

Not Rural America. I have that outside my kitchen door. I'd be looking for the majestic elk on a mountainside, the sunset in New Mexico, the view from the top of Mount Lemmon in Tucson, the little taverns in Nashville where Hank Williams once strummed his guitar for his supper, the Nebraska cornfields that have supported families for generations. All of the things that make living in America a unique experience.

Thank you myopinion I am looking for no-thing, no-one and no-where. I have zero expectations about this trip. If I dont climb Mt saint helens or go to Alaska for the summer...well then so be it, I'll find somewhere else to go. I'm just heading out to have some fun! ;D and maybe learn a few things about LL and his little world ;D. LL

There's nothing better than a "fly by the seat of your pants" trip. On Thursday, I'm heading to North Carolina, then to Daytona Beach for Bike Week. After that, we are just going to explore Florida on the bike. Taking only a toothbrush, clean clothes and a tent.....Hubby and I need it desperately.

Sounds like fun ;D ;D, what are you doing in NC? 8) One of my four brothers-in-law lives in Raleigh, so we are all meeting there to get set for the trip. At last count, there were 11 people going.

If I had to pick five books, I suppose it would be JLS, Atlas Shrugged, The Fountainhead, The Prophet, and a copy of the Bhagavad Gita... But I would greatly miss all the other books I have loved.
