In the book "One", Richard speaks of flying to Santa Monica for a speaking engagement. Does he still do this from time to time?

Perhaps it was a year ago or so, but a lady stated that she had seen Richard, and his daughter Kristelle, at a lecture in Denver, Colorado. He stated that he doesn't do that thing very often and, apparently he doesn't. Rather, he lives as a recluse on an island off the coast from Seattle.

He came to Brazil in mid-2000, to a biannual book selling event in the city of São Paulo. I traveled about 400 miles, out of my town of Rio, just to see him and deliver him a letter. I personally asked him to please please read it, for the letter meant 12 years of scribbling and rewriting and re-hammering the text for the possible day when I could finally send it to him.
It is impossible to know whether he has read it, and the few moments we had were so short, so terribly short, and I could think of nothing creative to say that wasn't already in my letter (quite a synthesis it was). But I got the chance to ask of him the meaning of the Star Trek episode he was hired to write in the late 1970s, Practice In Waking (never filmed, but published in 1996), and he explained it to the audience.

Richard appeared at the last annual fly-in in Osh Kosh, Wisconsin to promote his two new books and arrived, from what I read in FLYING magazine, in his Widgeon amphibian airplane.

I have. She was with him in the convention in Brazil. During the convention, he told the public that she was present, but added that they valued very much her privacy, so he would not present her to the audience.
Still, I could tell who she was: the only lady in the room who was holding a book about airplanes, in English -- whereas most everyone in Brazil do not speak English --, and who was talking to his assistants in English, with a heavy American accent. The way she was treated by his assistants, she could never be "just one more in the audience"; that lady had to be her. Likewise, after the meeting was over, she joined him and they left together, very close. When she saw something of a disappointed look in me, she was very nice, very caring in the way she treated me, effectively volunteering and asking me what was wrong. Then, I asked to take a picture with them together, but she would not. I most definitely respect her wish for privacy (particularly understandable in her case, married to a celebrity), so I will not give a description of her here. But she seemed very earnest, honest and was very, very nice and polite.

Hi again all, Glad to see this topic still getting some action. I've been working on a program to teach high school kids sailing through my yacht club and the US Power Squadron. The kids I teach are from Jordan High School in Long Beach Cal, the one Richard claimed to go to. Wished he knew how much they would like to meet him.
