Thank you for your replies!
A bit more to add -- and excuse me if I ramble as this may come out in a stream of consciousness...
I believe that any path to God is a vaild path -- until that path invalidates any other.
I do not believe that belief in Jesus (or Mohammed or Buddah for that matter) is required to "get to God." First of all, I believe that we cannot "get to God" because we are already there.
God is infinite. "Infinity plus one" is meaningless. There is nothing else outside of God. God is All There Is.
A very simplified definition of Heaven is "where God is" while Hell is simply defined as "where God is not". Seeing God as truly infinite means that there is no place we can (or need to) go to "get to God" -- we are there NOW. Wait... we are already in HEAVEN!! ;D and -- by extension -- Hell does not exist!
But, what of "sin"?? What about people like Hitler and Jeffrey Dahmer and Stalin and Saddam Hussein and "evil" people??
Sin does not exist. Ignorance, perhaps. But not "sin".
Because for sin to exist and for the possibility that "X amount of sins" or "Y degree of heinous sins" will mean that we are punished for eternity in Hell would have to mean that:
- God is not infinite (we would have to go somewhere that God is not and this cannot happen),
- God could not get what God wants (which is for us to be with Him/Her/It) which, in turn, means that
- We are, in the case of sin, more powerful than God so that
- God is not All-Powerful
But, then, what about free will? Can't we freely choose to disobey God? And, if we heinously disobey God, isn't it "just" that we go to Hell??
This is the argument that I grew up with.
But, for God to be Infinite and All-Loving (to Love us PERFECTLY and WITHOUT CONDITIONS AND WITHOUT JUDGEMENTS OR REQUIREMENTS OR STRINGS) then for free will to exist, it must exist while not canceling out the fact that God is Infinite and we are already "in Heaven".
What if we could freely act and think and speak WHILE AT THE SAME TIME God gets what God wants (namely, for us to be with Him/Her/It)?
Think of Heaven as a fantastic, way out, the best-of-the-best party, hosted by God. This party is better than you have ever seen or can even imagine -- grills with the best foods, all the best drinks, all your friends, pools to swim in (and which make you look GOOD in a bathing suit!), all the best games, all the best music, dancing, free money is given out (!!!), etc., etc., etc. This is the party you do NOT want to miss! And, it doesn't end!
But, there is a group of people (S. Inner and his posse) who, for whatever reason, don't want to go...
But, God WANTS to have them there. And God ALWAYS gets what God wants.
So, God sends them a letter. They return it unopened.
God calls them. They screen the call and never pick up.
God sends someone to talk to them and tell them everything that will be there. They hide in their house with the lights off until this person leaves.
God puts ads on the radio, tv, magazines, newspapers, billboards. They put cotton in their ears and blindfolds on.
Are they out of luck?
No!
God will find SOME way to get them there because the party just won't be the same without them. S. Inners and his group may THINK they are going to the diner on Friday night but JoAnn's Eats is REALLY the side door to Heaven's Party.
I see free will as the choice to NOT see that we are all One and already in Heaven. When we choose not to see that Heaven in inside us and outside us and all around us and in our very cells, we will act in ways that demonstrate this.
We act ignorantly. If we KNEW better, we would ACT better. As soon as we truly KNOW, we will act accordingly.
Therefore, I forgive the Hitlers of the world, the Jeffrey Dahmers, the Stalins, the Husseins, etc. of the world because I know they were acting the best way they knew how.
If you dig deep enough into the background of ANY "evil" person, you will find reasons for their behavior. We will always do the best we can based upon our knowledge and life experiences up to that point.
This is not justifying or rationalizing the child molester. This is seeking to understand and forgive.
I refuse to throw the first stone at A N Y O N E.
I believe that this knowledge of God within me is the Christ that we are all striving for. Jesus knew this. Mohammed knew this. Buddah knew this. Mother Theresa and Ghandi and Martin Luther King, Jr. all knew this to varying degrees.
The. Kingdom. Of. God. Is. WITHIN.
Y O U.Oh, and I think that all this is getting to break in a very beautiful and awesome way for everyone as more and more people are discovering their Christ Consciousnesses. We are reaching a critical mass....
Namasté!
