Dear Christian,
Actually lutefisk is a Norwegian treat eaten here in the United States at Holiday times. Years ago dried cod was shipped in bundles to the U.S. where the cod was soaked in lye to resuscitate the fish. Then the lye was washed off so that the fish could be eaten, usally with melted butter.
Today lye is not used, instead the fish is soaked in Caustic Soda, and it still smells terrible. In the twenty-eight years that I lived in Minnesota I never once tasted lutefisk, but I did eat Finnin Haddie.
I need to start reading Richard's series on the Flying Ferrets.

Sorry Michael, I read your last message in a hurry and got all the books and food mixed up..
No, I have never had the opportunity to eat lutefisk.. But I assure you that there are quite interesting traditional delicious treats up here that I´ve had to taste.. You ever eaten raindeer??
Well I´m getting myself hungry, gotta go.
And a small and kind "hello" for everyone.
Christian, from the cold, raindeer eating Finland.

All I can say is WOW (I'd try harder, but "wow" was good enough for Jonathan) ... this was a truly amazing, inspiring and wonderful read! I just don't believe I hadn't heard of it before now. I got a used copy on Amazon.com ($!.50 plus $5 shipping ;D ) and it was a retired library book from Washington state (how appropo!)
I'd love to discuss further if any other readers are into it ... this book not only offered a little "backstory" on Bridge ... but opens hearts and minds to the ways in which we shortchange ourselves if we allow childhood programming, misinformation and hurt feelings to dictate our lives. Divorce is hard enough on families, but missing out on a quality relationship as Jon came to find with Richard ... what a shame that would be!!

So... had Jon reconciled with his dad after the I&B breakup? And where are those gullnest members? Well, here's one, just dusting off the blast-zone remnants of RB's death star main weapon engaged departure from that old blasted to asteriods I&B cyber planet. Haven't thought of looking across the web horizon for connection with that part of our true family for several years, until today, and here's a mention from you. Will it be 10 years this summer or next since our I&B campfire in Salt Lake City. Were you here? Still have the video, all of the old I&B posts (which RB had given me to work on back then) somewhere in a long unaccessed corner of a harddrive, I beleive. Should burn them all to CD's I suppose for posterity, or some future RB biographer, along with some other unpublished post I&B blown-apart RB materials I've been given. Never imagined my posts back then would drive him away (And don't imagine they did, his justifications at the time notwithstanding) from the connection I felt we had with each other ("Nothing you could ever say could in any way hurt me, Joe"). Felt hurt, nonetheless, by his seemingly painfilled exit One insight I've gained over this past near decade. Those "gurus" worth following are the ones who are honest, open about their own challenges, open to learning from their fellow travellers. Those who deserve being pulled from their pedistals, are those who wear masks of perfection, masks of knowing some unique path, masks of having some special insight. That fear of a mask becomming transparent drives the amsk wearer into hiding. Or so it seems to me. Joe

If you go to alibris.com and search, you'll find a few copies floating there.
Michael, had to sell the Travel Air and it HURT! Though, with that door closed, another opened (as doors always do) and now find tremendous pleasure in my 1950 Bellanca Cruisemaster. I found Dad's old Travel Air in a hangar 40 miles south of here...in a million pieces, but there she was. The Parks is still in a pile in Ft Worth.
By the way, Everybody else, thanks for reading my brother's book and letting him know how you feel about it. I got a kick out of reading from his point of view and in my protective brotherly way, want him to be rewarded for his hard work. Give him encouragement and we'll all get to read something else from behind his mind:)
You rule, Jon..

to jon, if you happen by again soon...
i finished your book last night. after years of sifting through your dad's enlightening (and, frankly, life-altering) thoughts and ideas, i found your experience, your insights... and your heart... to be a valuable inspiration as well. beyond the initial discovery of the power within myself that richard's books inspired almost 8 years ago, your work has dissected the seeming loftiness of his philosophies and provided, in my mind, a much-needed clarification of the backdrop for his life... adding context... scenery, if you will... for the dramas that play out and the 'words to live by' that he posits in his books.
your writing was enjoyable. and i felt the mindset and perspective unique to each different stage of your childhood seep through your words in the writing style you chose for each period. at the beginning, i could hear you speaking from a child's point of view... even exhibiting the impatience and innocent misunderstandings typical at that age... and progressing slowly, steadily to find the truth. and yourself.
i trust that you and yours are well. in this small way, i thank you for adding clarity and perspective to my life discoveries. you've touched me... and i look forward to reading more of what you may choose to write.
peace, doug

I would like to lend a few words of encouragement to Jon. It was delightful to read your initial book. I must say, it would be wonderful to be able to read any future publication that you might come to produce. Best of luck in your endeavor and don't ever give up. Anxiouly awaiting in East Texas, TM

I&B was the abbreviation for Illusions & Beyond, a discussion area within the NewAge forum on CompuServe in ca 1994/1995 or so.
Richard mentioned it on the dust jacket of Running From Safety.
It was a wonderful time, like an interactive sequel to Illusions. Lots of messages each day. My first exposure to cyber community. Maybe 200 posters, 20 or so who would be active on any given day, 40 or so who posted at least once a month for a year or more.
One day Richard left saying he no longer felt safe among us when some of the discussion turned to his personal life. It seemed, given what he has shared in his books about his personal life that was a fair area for discussion. But it wasn't. After a few months the I&B forum was deleted by CompuServe. Some of us still stay in touch; Eva, Del, Bob, and me. Probably some others do too.
Had I it to do over, I'd avoid any appearance of offending Richard or being interested at all in his personal relationships. Just read where Illisions is due to become a movie. I'll sure put in my dollar toward his royalties, and urge all my friends to support that as well (assuming it's a Star Wars, and not a JLS! WHich I imagine, given Richard's experience with JLS, and the time he's spent finding what I imagine will be a perfect director/producer team -- a Star Wars it's sure to be).

I had interest in Richard Bach so I started reaing this book. I realize that Jonathan has a talent as much as Richard Bach. While I was reading this book, I saw Richard Bach again through his son's eyes. When I finished reading this book, I realized that they were a family who loved each other.
The relationship between father and son. That is endless love.

I don't think any of Richard's children except me are working on a book right now. I'm writing something called "How I Learn Stuff: Secrets of a Buccaneer Scholar" and Dad shows up a lot in it.
I'm largely self-educated, and that has a lot to do with Richard's relentless pep talks and questions.
